February 21

”The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.”  (Psalm 34:22)

When I was a child we used to play “tag”. The idea was that one of the kids ”was it” and was supposed to touch one of the other kids and say “you’re it”. Then the child who had been touched was supposed to pass it on to next child and so on. I can remember how we all fled in all directions away from the person who “was it”. No one wanted to “be it”.
But then it could happen that someone shouted ”pass”. That meant that the game had to stop for a moment, because you hade to talk about something and then you needed to be able to approach each other without risking being ‘tagged it’. Sometimes we also had a certain area where we could take refuge, a special place where you always had a “pass” and where you could not “get tagged”.
In our lives we “get tagged” all the time. Setbacks, failures and other knocks will try to throw blame and guilt upon us as a heavy blanket. We try to flee in any direction and often we don’t know where to run. Then we need to reach out for God’s promise as a deliberating pass rule: “… none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned”.

Prayer
Lord, thank You for being my “pass”, my refuge where I can be safe and free from condemnation.
